How do you pay it forward?
The Viscardi Society honors the memory of Henry Viscardi Jr. He was born with short twisted legs that wrapped around his body and spent the first eight years of his life in the hospital. After countless surg eries, his legs were like stumps that he propelled forward with crutches. At the age of 27, his orthopedic surgeon told him that he had worn his legs down by constant use and that they were not likely to carry him past the next six months. The surgeon embarked on a mission to find artificial limbs for Viscardi. He sought one limb maker after another and they all had the same verdict—impossible. He didn’t give up and finally succeeded. As payment, the surgeon asked that Viscardi make a difference in the life of another. This call to action became Viscardi’s life mission. He founded a well-known center for children and adults with disabilities in New York. It served as a job training site for adults and a tuition-free school for children. Viscardi became one of the world’s leading advocates for the rights of people with disabilities, advising every president from Franklin D. Roosevelt to Jimmy Carter.
